JC Penney, or JC Penney Corporation, Inc. formerly JC Penney Stores Company (1913-24) and JC Penney Co. (1924-68), an American retail company, founded in 1902 by James Cash Penney and today engaged in the merchandising of clothing, home furnishings, jewellery, cosmetics and kitchenware. At the beginning of the 21st century, the company operated more than 800 shops in the United States and Puerto Rico. It is a subsidiary of JC Penney Company, Inc. and is headquartered in Plano, Texas. In addition to selling conventional merchandise, JCPenney shops often house various leased departments such as Sephora, MNG by Mango, Liz Clairbone, Seattle's best coffee, salons, optical centres, portrait studios and jewellery repair.
