FloorScore®

About FloorScore®

FloorScore® is a certification program developed by the Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI) in collaboration with Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), an independent third-party certification body. It focuses on the indoor air quality (IAQ) of flooring products and is specifically designed for resilient flooring, including vinyl, linoleum, rubber, and laminate.

The FloorScore® certification ensures that flooring products meet strict indoor air quality standards and do not emit high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other harmful substances. VOCs are chemicals that can be released from various materials and may have adverse effects on indoor air quality and human health.

To obtain the FloorScore® certification, flooring products undergo rigorous testing in accredited laboratories. The testing evaluates the product's emissions of VOCs and other contaminants, such as formaldehyde, to ensure they meet the stringent criteria set by the program.

The certification process includes both laboratory testing and a review of the manufacturing processes and raw materials used in the flooring product. Manufacturers are required to provide detailed documentation and information about their product's composition, including adhesives, finishes, and other components that may affect indoor air quality.

Once a flooring product has successfully met the FloorScore® requirements, it is granted the certification and can be labeled with the FloorScore® logo. This logo helps consumers, architects, and building owners identify flooring options that contribute to better indoor air quality and support healthier indoor environments.

The FloorScore® certification is particularly relevant in commercial and institutional settings, such as office buildings, healthcare facilities, schools, and retail spaces, where indoor air quality is a critical consideration. It can also be beneficial in residential applications, especially for those individuals who are sensitive to VOCs or have specific indoor air quality concerns.

By choosing FloorScore® certified flooring products, consumers and building professionals can be confident that the flooring materials have been tested and certified to meet rigorous indoor air quality standards. This certification promotes healthier indoor environments by reducing the potential for harmful emissions from flooring products and supports sustainable and responsible building practices.
