About GreenScreen®

GreenScreen® is a methodology and certification program developed by the nonprofit organization Clean Production Action. It is designed to assess and guide the selection of safer chemical ingredients used in various products and materials. The goal of GreenScreen® is to promote the use of chemicals that have a lower impact on human health and the environment.

The GreenScreen® methodology involves evaluating the hazards and potential risks associated with chemical substances. It provides a framework for comparing and classifying chemicals based on their inherent hazards and potential for exposure. The assessment considers factors such as carcinogenicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation.

The GreenScreen® certification program offers three levels of certification: GreenScreen® Certified, GreenScreen® Benchmark, and GreenScreen® Authorized. These certifications help companies, manufacturers, and product developers make informed decisions when selecting chemicals and materials for their products.

The GreenScreen® Certified designation is given to chemicals that have undergone a rigorous assessment and are considered safer alternatives to hazardous substances. This certification provides a level of confidence that the chemical has been thoroughly evaluated and meets specific criteria for human health and environmental safety.

The GreenScreen® Benchmark designation is assigned to chemicals that have undergone a screening assessment but require further data or information for a complete evaluation. It serves as an interim measure to encourage the use of chemicals that show potential for being safer alternatives.

The GreenScreen® Authorized designation is given to third-party assessors who have demonstrated their expertise and competence in conducting GreenScreen® assessments. Authorized assessors are recognized as qualified professionals who can provide accurate and reliable assessments of chemical substances.

By utilizing the GreenScreen® methodology and certifications, companies can make more informed choices about the chemicals they use in their products. It helps drive the adoption of safer alternatives, encourages transparency in the supply chain, and supports the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly products.

Overall, GreenScreen® plays a valuable role in promoting the adoption of safer chemicals, reducing the use of hazardous substances, and advancing the goal of a more sustainable and healthier future.
