Certified Naturally Grown - Produce and Flowers

About Certified Naturally Grown - Produce and Flowers

Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) provides peer-reviewed certification to farmers and beekeepers who prioritize sustainable agriculture and work in harmony with nature. Their focus is on producing food for local communities without relying on synthetic chemicals or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

With a mission to support its members, CNG promotes sustainable agriculture through grassroots networking, advocacy, and peer-reviewed certification. The organization's standards are rooted in the principles of the organic movement, emphasizing transparency, direct relationships, and the belief that working together can create something valuable.

CNG certification offers a sense of ownership and pride for farmers who join the grassroots initiative. Currently, over 750 farmers and beekeepers across the United States and Canada hold CNG certification.

The CNG label is particularly valuable for producers who market directly to consumers through CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture), farmers markets, and local food businesses. If a farmer intends to sell to large retail outlets or wholesalers, they may find that certification under the national organic program is a better fit. However, some farmers choose to pursue both certifications, with approximately eight percent of CNG members opting for dual certification. This allows them to benefit from the local connotations and grassroots nature of CNG while also accessing wholesale organic markets through organic certification.

CNG farmers commit to using no synthetic herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, or GMOs. Livestock raised under CNG standards primarily graze on pasture and have ample space for freedom of movement. Additionally, feed for livestock must be grown without synthetic inputs or genetically modified seeds.

Participation in CNG requires a full commitment to robust organic practices. The organization's produce and livestock certification standards are based on the National Organic Program's guidelines. Furthermore, CNG has developed its own certification standards for Apiary certification, aligning with organic principles. They are also in the process of developing certification standards for mushroom and aquaponics production.

In summary, Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) provides peer-reviewed certification to farmers and beekeepers who prioritize sustainable agriculture and avoid synthetic chemicals and GMOs. With a focus on local food systems, CNG supports its members through grassroots networking and advocacy. Farmers committed to CNG certification adhere to rigorous organic practices and benefit from the unique value and local associations the CNG label provides.
