Q Robusta
About (Q Robusta)
Q Robusta is a quality grading system used to evaluate the quality of Robusta coffee beans. It is a part of the broader coffee grading system known as the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) Q Grader program. The Q Robusta program focuses specifically on Robusta coffee, which is one of the two main species of coffee beans along with Arabica.
The Q Robusta program follows a rigorous and standardized evaluation process to assess the sensory attributes of Robusta coffee. Trained Q Robusta graders, who have undergone extensive sensory training, evaluate various characteristics of the coffee beans, such as aroma, flavor, body, acidity, and overall quality.
The Q Robusta grading system assigns a score to each coffee sample based on its sensory attributes. The grading scale ranges from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better quality. Coffees that score 80 points or above are considered specialty grade Robusta, indicating exceptional quality and distinctive flavor profiles.
The Q Robusta program helps coffee producers, exporters, and buyers in assessing and distinguishing high-quality Robusta coffee. It provides a common language and framework for evaluating and trading Robusta beans based on their sensory attributes.
By participating in the Q Robusta program, coffee producers can gain valuable insights into the quality of their beans, identify areas for improvement in their production processes, and potentially command higher prices for their premium-grade Robusta coffee.
For buyers and consumers, the Q Robusta certification provides assurance of the coffee's quality and flavor characteristics. It helps them make informed decisions when purchasing Robusta coffee and supports the recognition of Robusta as a specialty coffee category in its own right.
It's important to note that the Q Robusta program is focused on quality evaluation and grading rather than addressing sustainability or ethical considerations in coffee production. Other certifications and standards, such as Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance, may be relevant for assessing the sustainability and ethical aspects of coffee production.
