Naturleder

The NATURLEDER IVN ZERTIFIZIERT standard, developed by IVN (International Association of Natural Textile Industry), is a quality seal that certifies a high level of ecology and quality for labeled leather products. The standard focuses on evaluating and promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility throughout the entire production chain of leather products. The evaluation process of NATURLEDER considers various aspects of production, usage, and disposal to ensure a meaningful reduction in resource consumption, environmental protection, and health safety. It assesses the environmental footprint, hazardous substances, disposal options, and recycling possibilities associated with the product and its processing steps. Health-related issues for both production workers and consumers are also taken into account during the evaluation. The standard sets out several requirements for businesses seeking certification. These include the use of a two-tier wastewater treatment plant, the avoidance of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and modified substances, and the adherence to specified chemical specifications. The sourcing of raw materials from animals primarily raised for meat, rather than additional polluting animal husbandry, is emphasized. The use of wild animals or species threatened by extinction is strictly prohibited. In the tanning process, which is known to have environmental and health risks, the use of chrome tanning, mineral tanning agents, and heavy metals is forbidden. NATURLEDER promotes the use of vegetable-based tanning or chamois leather, with a requirement for species preservation certification for the traditional use of whale oil in chamois leather production. The use of certain tanning agents, such as aluminium, zirconium, or titanium, is also not allowed. For leather dyeing, NATURLEDER specifies that dyes should be free from harmful substances, such as AOX (adsorbable organic halogens) and heavy metals, and comply with EU regulations. The use of vegetable-based dyes is encouraged. Mechanical processing techniques like milling and studding are preferred over solvent-based finishes or coatings containing polyurethane or fluor. These processes enhance the softness, fullness, and pleasant feel of the leather, creating a more even surface. NATURLEDER emphasizes the breathability and skin-friendliness of naturally tanned leather without chromium, which develops a beautiful patina over time. In addition to environmental considerations, the standard also includes social clauses. It ensures respect for the rights of employees, prohibits forced and child labor, upholds freedom of association and collective bargaining rights, and advocates for the payment of decent wages. Overall, the NATURLEDER standard aims to promote sustainable and responsible practices in the leather industry, covering environmental, health, and social aspects. By adhering to this standard, leather manufacturers demonstrate their commitment to producing high-quality, eco-friendly, and socially responsible leather products.
