About EcoLabel Luxembourg

The EcoLabel in Luxembourg is an initiative led by the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure. It has been running since 1999, and the non-profit organization OekoZenter Lëtzebuerg is responsible for providing environmental counseling to businesses aiming to join the EcoLabel initiative and those already part of the network.

The certification has been awarded to 37 accommodations in Luxembourg, including country lodgings, guest rooms, youth hostels, campsites, and luxury hotels. These businesses undergo a rigorous evaluation process and must meet a compulsory set of criteria to demonstrate their commitment to environmental sustainability.

The criteria focus on various aspects, including energy and water efficiency, waste prevention and management, sustainable purchasing practices, use of organic and locally sourced produce, support for public transport and cycling options, and the use of eco-friendly cleaning products. The businesses need to implement over 60 individual measures to achieve a significant reduction in their environmental impact.

An independent auditor conducts initial audits and subsequent reassessments every three years to ensure that the businesses maintain the required standards.

The coordination committee, comprised of various organizations including government ministries, tourism associations, and environmental agencies, serves as the decision-making body for the EcoLabel. The committee ensures the independence and neutrality of the label and guides its main orientations and guidelines.

Overall, the EcoLabel initiative in Luxembourg plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable practices within the tourism and hospitality sector. It provides recognition to businesses that meet the rigorous environmental criteria and encourages them to continue their efforts in reducing their environmental footprint.

It's important to refer to the latest information from OekoZenter Lëtzebuerg or the relevant ministries for the most up-to-date details on the EcoLabel program in Luxembourg.
