UTZ CERTIFIED

UTZ Certified, now known as the Rainforest Alliance, is a global certification program and sustainability label for agricultural products, primarily focusing on coffee, cocoa, and tea. It was founded in 2002 by a Dutch non-profit organization called the Utz Kapeh Foundation, which aimed to create a market-driven approach to improve the sustainability and livelihoods of farmers. The Utz Certified program set standards for responsible and sustainable agricultural practices, including environmental, social, and economic aspects. It provided certification and verification services to ensure that farms and supply chains met these standards. The program aimed to promote sustainable farming practices, protect the environment, and improve the welfare of farmers and workers. In 2018, Utz Certified merged with the Rainforest Alliance, an international non-profit organization known for its work in environmental conservation and sustainable development. The merged organization retained the Rainforest Alliance name and logo, incorporating the expertise and experience of both entities to create a stronger and more comprehensive sustainability certification program. The Rainforest Alliance's certification program builds on the foundation established by Utz Certified. It continues to promote sustainable agriculture, working with farmers and companies around the world to improve farming practices, conserve natural resources, protect biodiversity, and enhance the welfare of workers and local communities. The certification program covers a wide range of agricultural commodities beyond coffee, cocoa, and tea, including bananas, palm oil, flowers, and more.
