About (GLOBAL GAP)
GLOBALG.A.P. (Good Agricultural Practice) is an internationally recognized certification program for agricultural production. It sets voluntary standards for the safe and sustainable production of agricultural products and promotes responsible farming practices. The program was established in 1997 by the EUREPGAP initiative, which later evolved into GLOBALG.A.P. It is now managed by GLOBALG.A.P. c/o FoodPLUS GmbH, a private organization based in Germany.
The main objective of GLOBALG.A.P. is to establish and maintain a reliable framework for agricultural production that ensures food safety, environmental protection, animal welfare, and worker health and safety. The program covers various agricultural sectors, including crops, livestock, aquaculture, and integrated farm assurance.
To achieve GLOBALG.A.P. certification, farmers and producers must comply with a set of standards and undergo audits conducted by accredited certification bodies. The standards encompass a wide range of criteria, including traceability, farm management, environmental protection, animal welfare, worker health and safety, and integrated pest management. Compliance with these standards is assessed through on-site inspections and documentation verification.
GLOBALG.A.P. certification provides several benefits for farmers, producers, retailers, and consumers. It helps farmers improve their farming practices, enhance product quality and safety, access new markets, and demonstrate compliance with international standards. For retailers and consumers, GLOBALG.A.P. certification provides assurance that the agricultural products they purchase have been produced responsibly and in accordance with recognized standards.
While GLOBALG.A.P. is a certification program, it operates as a for-profit organization. It charges fees for certification services, training, and other associated activities. The revenue generated from these fees is used to support the operation and administration of the program, including maintaining the standards, providing training and education, conducting audits, and promoting the program globally.
