Landseed Earth

🇨🇦 Canada

Landseed is a public benefit corporation that brings the worlds of ecology and finance face to face, to transform how conservation is funded, and to allow society to become more deeply invested in nature. **Context** Nature destruction is happening faster than nature conservation. This doesn’t happen because we don’t care about nature. It’s because our system of money doesn’t adequately value the benefits that nature provides (but it definitely recognizes the expenses). Money and prices are a fundamental part of how we all make decisions, both large and small. **Objective** Landseed brings together the worlds of investment and ecology, so that it’s as easy to invest in nature as it is to invest in a mutual fund. Investors will see the value of their investment grow, commensurate with the health and scarcity of the nature that’s connected to that investment. And they’ll be able to get their investment back, plus or minus the value change to the natural resource itself. Our most important principle is the "proof of protection" of nature. **Outcomes** When we achieve this, several things will happen: - We will open nature conservation to the world of investment, which will provide orders of magnitude more capital for conservation than the world of philanthropy. - We as a society will have strong motivation to restore or improve natural resources, because there will also be financial incentive to do so. And we’ll have strong motivation to not destroy or waste natural resources, for the same reasons. - Collectively, we’ll feel a stronger sense of connection to nature, because we’ll look at it with a similar sense of ownership connection that we feel to our own belongings and homes. > _Economics is a discipline that shapes decisions of the utmost consequence, and so matters to us all. By **bringing economics and ecology face to face**, we can help to save the natural world at what may be the last minute—and in doing so, save ourselves._ — Sir David Attenborough

About (Landseed Earth)

Landseed is a public benefit corporation that brings the worlds of ecology and finance face to face, to transform how conservation is funded, and to allow society to become more deeply invested in nature.

Context Nature destruction is happening faster than nature conservation. This doesn’t happen because we don’t care about nature. It’s because our system of money doesn’t adequately value the benefits that nature provides (but it definitely recognizes the expenses). Money and prices are a fundamental part of how we all make decisions, both large and small.

Objective Landseed brings together the worlds of investment and ecology, so that it’s as easy to invest in nature as it is to invest in a mutual fund. Investors will see the value of their investment grow, commensurate with the health and scarcity of the nature that’s connected to that investment. And they’ll be able to get their investment back, plus or minus the value change to the natural resource itself. Our most important principle is the "proof of protection" of nature.

Outcomes When we achieve this, several things will happen:

  • We will open nature conservation to the world of investment, which will provide orders of magnitude more capital for conservation than the world of philanthropy.
  • We as a society will have strong motivation to restore or improve natural resources, because there will also be financial incentive to do so. And we’ll have strong motivation to not destroy or waste natural resources, for the same reasons.
  • Collectively, we’ll feel a stronger sense of connection to nature, because we’ll look at it with a similar sense of ownership connection that we feel to our own belongings and homes.

Economics is a discipline that shapes decisions of the utmost consequence, and so matters to us all. By bringing economics and ecology face to face, we can help to save the natural world at what may be the last minute—and in doing so, save ourselves. — Sir David Attenborough
