TRANSPARENT FARMER PARTNERSHIPS SUSTAINABLE SOURCING We embrace a holistic approach to the supply chain, one that creates a transparent coalition and empowers our farmers through the proportionate distribution of values. We believe ..... "The Ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and empowerment of human beings." Direct Trade Sourcing Farmer Centric Approach The coffee industry faces an outdated and complex supply chain dominated by a small number of players that distribute value disproportionately between regions of consumption and production. The farmer remains at a large disadvantage, still earning a subsistence wage despite the growing demand for coffee worldwide. Typically, coffee farmers receive just 2 to 5% of the price of a cup of coffee! We take a holistic approach that creates a transparent and self-sustaining coalition network built to offer better pricing, empower the farmer socio-economically and facilitate fair and direct partnerships. Coffee-growing must be perceived as an attractive source of income in order for farmers to pursue it, develop awareness of sustainable growing methods and be willing to remain in business as our partners. From The Ground Up Best Farming Practices The quality and yield of coffee are greatly dependent on fertile soils, healthy trees, clean water and suitable climatic conditions. Most smallholder farmers generally have limited access to knowledge, technology, and loans. This in turn negatively impacts the quality and quantity of coffee they produce and subsequently jeopardizes their livelihoods. We are focused on improving coffee quality, protecting the environment and ultimately producing the optimum crop that recognizably increases the farmer's income. To that end, our farmers are trained on quality assurance techniques such as safe water use and organic farming. Our Local agronomists lend farmer support in replacing old trees or planting hybrid varieties suited to changing climatic conditions. Water...... Clean Water Projects Sustainability is often a long-term and evolving goal that requires a long-term vision and multi-year planning by all participants. We embrace farmers on their sustainability journey and work alongside them all year-round for continued improvement. During the harvest season, picked ripe coffee cherries are soaked in water-filled, built-in cement tanks where there are fermented for 24 to 48 hours. To safeguard the ecological basis of processing, we are partnering with our farmers to install above-ground water tanks to supply clean filtered water. We are continually looking for new ways to modernization farm management and processing methods Education & Vocational Programs Youth Empowerment We work closely with farmers to address the needs of their local communities. We are committed to promoting higher education standards for all. In that spirit, we fund local school projects like building new dorms & libraries, water tanks & greenhouses to meet school food programs. A new students’ dorm means increased student enrollment and more time spent on studies. Our educational projects are designed to improve social structures and empower the younger generation in supporting future security for aging farmers We also provide farmers with year-round basic training programs that focus on bookkeeping and quality improvement that supports the phasing out of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Our training programs also double as community support networks where farmers can share resources and market intelligence. Intercropping Food Security Coffee farmers face increased risks of shifting weather patterns caused by climate change. For most, their incomes are largely dependent on a single harvest and an inflexible crop cycle which is susceptible to catastrophic weather events. As partners, we seek to ensure the food security of our farmers. We provide them with financing and training in bee-hive farming and growing new crops (maize, bananas) to supplement and diversify their revenue streams. We also support them in adapting mitigating strategies such as irrigation and planting shade trees to conserve water and soil moisture.
