About Energy Ministers’ Meeting

The Energy Ministers' Meeting (EMM) is a significant body within the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). It serves as the supreme governing body of IRENA and is composed of energy ministers from all member states. The EMM plays a crucial role in guiding and overseeing the activities and policies of IRENA, ensuring its effective functioning and strategic direction.

As the highest decision-making authority, the EMM receives reports from both the Council of the Agency and the General Assembly. These reports provide updates on IRENA's activities, initiatives, and progress towards achieving its mandate. The EMM has the authority to elect and appoint the members of the Council, as well as to elect the Director-General of IRENA.

The primary focus of the EMM is to provide comprehensive and coordinated strategic advice to the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) on matters related to energy security, reliability, and affordability. This entails identifying and advancing reforms that contribute to achieving these objectives. The EMM collaborates with various jurisdictions in the development and implementation of national energy laws, rules, and frameworks. It also advises COAG on energy productivity strategies and the operation of the Electricity Transmission Network Planning and Development Framework.

Chaired by the Commonwealth Minister for Energy, the EMM comprises energy ministers from different states and territories in Australia. These include the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory. The collective expertise and perspectives of these energy ministers contribute to informed decision-making and the development of robust energy policies at both the national and regional levels.

Through its strategic guidance and collaboration, the Energy Ministers' Meeting plays a vital role in shaping the energy landscape, promoting renewable energy adoption, and addressing the challenges and opportunities in the sector. By fostering cooperation and coordination among member states, the EMM contributes to the advancement of sustainable and clean energy solutions to meet the evolving energy needs of nations.
