About Stussy
Stussy is an American fashion brand that was founded in the early 1980s by Shawn Stussy. The brand originated from the Southern California surf scene and quickly became a part of the surfwear trend. However, its appeal extended beyond surfing to be embraced by the skateboard, hip hop, and punk scenes. The iconic Stussy logo, which Shawn Stussy originally scribbled on his handcrafted surfboards with a broad-tipped marker, became a defining symbol of the brand. This logo was also used on T-shirts, shorts, and caps that were sold out of his car around Laguna Beach, California.
The brand's signature style and logo were derived from Shawn Stussy's uncle, Jan Stussy, and it has often been associated with the 'Cool S' style popular in the 1990s, although this is a common misconception. In 1984, Shawn Stussy partnered with his friend Frank Sinatra Jr. to sell the apparel, and by 1988, the company had expanded into Europe, opening a boutique in SoHo, New York, and establishing multiple locations throughout the 1990s. By the early 90s, Stussy was generating revenues of $17 million, reaching $20 million by 1992. The brand was sold in both specialty and department stores in the United States, and internationally in specialty shops alongside high-end design clothing.
In 1996, Shawn Stussy resigned as president, and Sinatra Jr. bought his share of the company, with the Sinatra family still owning the brand years later. Stussy's apparel is available in branded stores and other retailers across Europe, Asia, the United States, Canada, and Australia. The brand's early success can be attributed to its popularity within various youth subcultures and its ability to redefine the look and ideology of casualwear.
Stussy has also been known for its collaborations, such as the one with Marvel in 2011, where they released an extensive line of T-shirts featuring popular superheroes combined with Stussy's graphic language. Another notable collaboration was with fashion designer Matthew Williams in 2019, which included a garment-dyed tee made of recycled organic cotton and a pair of co-branded leather hiking boots. The brand continues to cater to men, women, and children with a wide range of clothing items, including the classic Stussy tees, hoodies, jackets, and accessories, maintaining its position as a staple in the streetwear fashion industry.
