About Modcloth

ModCloth is an online retailer that specializes in indie and vintage-inspired women’s clothing. The brand was founded in 2002 by Susan Gregg Koger and Eric Koger while they were students at Carnegie Mellon University. Initially, ModCloth started as a website to sell used vintage dresses, but it quickly grew into a larger business. By the 2010s, ModCloth had become one of the largest independent online fashion retailers, with sales exceeding $100 million. The company's marketing approach was unique in that it involved buyer input on designs and prints, fostering a community-like feel among its customers.

The brand is known for its commitment to inclusivity, offering a wide range of sizes from XS to 4X, with the goal of providing styles for everybody and every body. ModCloth has also been involved in various charitable initiatives, partnering with organizations that have a direct impact on women. This includes support for The Trans Wellness Center, The Pink House, and The National Domestic Violence Hotline.

ModCloth's design team is responsible for creating in-house prints and timeless vintage-inspired clothing that resonates with their customers' personal style and brings joyfulness into their lives. The brand encourages its community to engage with them through social media platforms like Instagram, where customers can share their ModCloth styles and participate in exclusive giveaways.

Throughout its history, ModCloth has undergone several changes in ownership. In March 2017, it was acquired by Jet.com, a subsidiary of Walmart, with the intention of running it independently while retaining both the website and the retail store in Austin. The partnership aimed to provide ModCloth with more working capital, the ability to open more physical stores, and the opportunity to reach a broader consumer base. However, in October 2019, Walmart sold ModCloth to Go Global Retail, a brand investment platform. Despite these changes, ModCloth continues to stay true to its roots, offering vintage-inspired fashion with a contemporary twist.
