About Lucy & Yak
Lucy & Yak is a British clothing brand that was established in 2017 by Lucy Greenwood and Christopher Renwick. The brand is renowned for its distinctive dungarees and has a strong commitment to sustainability and ethical manufacturing practices. The founders, Lucy Greenwood and Christopher Renwick, started their journey by selling vintage clothing on Depop and soon noticed a market gap for dungarees. This led to the creation of Lucy & Yak, which began with a modest stock of 30 pairs of dungarees and has since expanded its product range.
The brand's mission is to create products that not only bring joy to people but also are kinder to the planet and the individuals involved in their making. Lucy & Yak places a high value on creativity, community, and comfort, designing fun and colorful prints that encourage individual expression, building a supportive community of customers, and creating comfortable clothing suitable for all body types.
Lucy & Yak's commitment to sustainability is evident in its use of sustainable fabrics, including GOTS-certified organic cotton sourced from India. The brand supports the Fior Di Loto foundation, which aims to improve the education and living conditions of girls in villages around Pushkar. The tailors employed by Lucy & Yak are paid four times the state minimum wage in India, and the factories operate on solar energy. In addition to organic cotton, the brand utilizes Lenzing Ecovero fabric, flax linen, deadstock cotton, and recycled plastic bottles in its clothing.
The company has physical stores in various UK cities, including Brighton, Norwich, Bristol, Nottingham, Manchester, Cambridge, and Cardiff. These stores not only serve as retail spaces but also embody the brand's ethos and aesthetic. In 2022, Lucy & Yak collaborated with Ed Sheeran, inspired by the artwork of his album Equals, which featured an ecru and black butterfly print.
Lucy & Yak continues to grow and evolve, with a focus on responsible fashion and a positive environmental and social impact. The brand's approach to fashion is described as having a "square label with a circular soul," reflecting its commitment to making clothes for every body while upholding its values. With revenues reaching £22.7 million in 2022 and a team of 180 employees, Lucy & Yak is a testament to the possibility of combining style, sustainability, and ethical practices in the fashion industry.
