About Greenwood Mills

Greenwood Mills is a textile company that has been operating in South Carolina for more than 130 years. It was founded in 1889 by William L. Durst and John K. Durst, who started with 2,500 spindles, 84 looms, and 75 employees. Since then, the company has expanded to include several plants that specialize in weaving, knitting, finishing, and dying fabrics. The company has also established an international presence with a location in London.

Greenwood Mills is known for its high-quality products and its innovation in the textile industry. It was one of the first companies to adopt long draft spinning and Draper looms, which improved the quality and efficiency of its yarns and fabrics. It also became the only mill capable of producing military-grade poplin during World War II, earning four Army-Navy “E” Awards for its contribution to the war effort. The company has continued to supply fabrics for the United States Armed Forces, as well as for other clients in various sectors.

Greenwood Mills is also a family-owned business that values its employees and its community. It is currently led by the Self Family, who became the sole owners of the company in 1935. The Self Foundation, founded in 1942, has donated more than $60 million to various causes in the Greenwood area, including the Self Memorial Hospital. The company also provides training and development opportunities for its workers, and fosters a culture of respect and teamwork.
