DETOX
DETOX is an environmental initiative launched by Greenpeace in 2011. It aims to eliminate hazardous chemicals from the production of textiles and clothing, and promote a more sustainable and safer industry. The DETOX campaign focuses on addressing the pollution caused by the release of toxic chemicals during textile production, particularly in the supply chains of major global fashion brands.
The goal of DETOX is to encourage fashion brands to commit to zero discharge of hazardous chemicals from their production processes and supply chains by implementing a comprehensive set of measures. These measures include:
Transparency: Brands are encouraged to disclose information about the chemicals used in their production processes and supply chains.
Chemical Management: Brands are expected to establish strict chemical management systems that minimize the use of hazardous chemicals and ensure proper handling and disposal.
Detox Commitment: Brands are required to make a public commitment to eliminate hazardous chemicals and take concrete steps towards achieving this goal.
Supply Chain Collaboration: Brands are encouraged to work closely with their suppliers to implement safer chemical alternatives and promote responsible manufacturing practices.
The DETOX initiative has been successful in mobilizing major fashion brands to take action and commit to detoxifying their supply chains. Over 80 global brands have made public commitments to eliminate hazardous chemicals from their production processes, and many have made significant progress in reducing chemical pollution.
By raising awareness and holding brands accountable, DETOX aims to drive systemic change in the textile industry towards safer and more sustainable practices. It seeks to protect the environment, workers, and consumers from the harmful impacts of toxic chemicals used in textile production.
