Directions To use a vanilla bean, you need to split it in two, lengthwise, with a knife. This exposes the tiny black seeds and oils inside. Using the non-sharpened side of the knife, scrape the pod to retrieve the vanilla flavoring. You can also use the pods by adding them into a small bottle of vodka (or other alcohol), and allowing it to soak. After a few weeks the flavor will be extracted into the liquid, which can then be used the same way as regular vanilla extracts.
