About Mossimo
Mossimo is a clothing brand that was established in 1986 by Mossimo Giannulli. The brand was conceived on Balboa Island in Newport Beach, California, and it quickly became known for its sportswear and accessories, catering primarily to youth and teenage demographics. The brand's offerings included a variety of items such as shirts, jeans, jackets, socks, underwear, and accessories. Mossimo's rise to popularity was rapid, with the company seeing significant profits within its first few years of operation. This success was partly due to the brand's presence in the 1990 volleyball film Side Out, which featured Mossimo clothing.
In 1996, Mossimo went public with an initial public offering, marking a significant milestone for the company. However, the brand faced challenges as it attempted to transition from its streetwear/beachwear roots to high fashion, which resulted in a substantial drop in share prices. In response to this, Mossimo Giannulli shifted the brand's strategy and began to target a broader market by entering into a licensing agreement with Target stores in 2000. This partnership proved to be lucrative, with Mossimo sales generating substantial revenue.
Despite the success, the brand underwent changes in 2017 when Target decided to introduce new lines and phase out some of its existing ones, including Mossimo. This decision came at a time when Mossimo Giannulli was involved in a widely publicized college admissions bribery scandal, which led to a distancing of the brand from its founder.
In 2006, the Mossimo brand was acquired by Iconix Brand Group, which marked the end of Mossimo Giannulli's direct involvement with the company he founded. Under Iconix, the brand continued to operate and maintain its presence in the fashion industry. Throughout its history, Mossimo has experienced various transformations, from its early days as a competitor to brands like Stussy to its more recent iterations under different ownership. Despite these changes, Mossimo has left a lasting impact on the fashion industry, particularly in the realm of casual and sportswear. The brand's journey reflects the dynamic nature of the fashion world and the importance of adaptability in maintaining relevance over time.
