Bonobos

Bonobos is an upscale e-commerce-driven apparel company that designs and sells menswear. Founded in 2007 by Stanford Business School students Andy Dunn and Brian Spaly, Bonobos started as an online retailer. Their mission was to create well-fitting men's clothing that went beyond the traditional khakis. The brand gained popularity for its innovative approach to fit and style.

Initially, Bonobos focused on pants. Brian Spaly, inspired by his own dissatisfaction with khakis, designed pants with a curved waistband, medium rise, and tailored thigh. These pants eliminated the dreaded ""khaki diaper butt"" and provided a better fit. As demand grew, Andy Dunn joined the venture, and they launched Bonobos as an online destination for men's clothing.

Over the years, Bonobos expanded its product range. In addition to pants, they now offer men's suits, trousers, denim, shirts, shorts, swimwear, outerwear, and accessories. Their commitment to fit remains central to their brand identity. No two men are alike, so Bonobos provides a range of options, including skinny, tailored, slim, straight, and athletic fits.

In 2012, Bonobos took a bold step by diversifying into physical retail locations. They introduced their ""Guideshop"" concept, which allowed customers to try on clothing before making e-commerce transactions. These Guideshops provided a personalized shopping experience, combining the convenience of online shopping with the benefits of in-person fitting.

Bonobos also partnered with Nordstrom, further expanding its reach. The brand's success attracted institutional investment, with Accel Partners and Lightspeed Venture Partners injecting $18.5 million into the company in 2010. As the assortment grew to include suits, dress shirts, and more, Bonobos continued to prioritize fit and quality.

In April 2023, Express and management firm WHP Global acquired Bonobos from Walmart for $75 million. The deal was completed on May 25, 2023. Despite ownership changes, Bonobos remains committed to providing men with well-fitting, stylish clothing.
