Recreational Equipment (REI) is one of the nation's largest consumer cooperatives, with over 20 million members and 170 outlets in nearly 40 states. REI specializes in high-end gear, clothing, and footwear for outdoor activities such as climbing, kayaking, skiing, hiking, and camping. The company also offers gear repair services and sells merchandise online. In addition, REI's travel service, REI Adventures, provides opportunities to explore the outdoors through guided trips such as cycling in the Alps, sea kayaking, and camping in Alaska, the San Juan Islands, Utah, California, and Tennessee. REI was founded in 1938 by climbers Lloyd and Mary Anderson.
